A year ago this holiday weekend, I suffered a retinal detachment in my right eye. This event was my worst nightmare terrifyingly realized. The signs were all there for quite a while, and with hindsight, I now recognize that the timeline prior to the detachment was peppered with a volley of misdiagnoses. I saw the increase in floaters and flashes, but was told repeatedly all was fine with my eye. Although my instinct signaled alarms in my brain that the checkups were missing something, I dismissed my little voice as not being rational. Afterall, I had my eyes checked and was given a clean bill of eyeball health. Ultimately, ignoring it was a really stupid thing to do. Had I listened to my screaming little voice, I could have prevented the detachment from happening at all. A retina in the early stages of detachment can be remedied easily during an office visit.

As someone who travels all the time, I was very lucky the detachment didn’t happen when I was at distant location. A retinal detachment is time-critical. Emergency treatment makes the difference between saving your eyesight and going permanently blind. I was truly blessed to be home at the time and received immediate surgery to reattach it. The recovery was difficult and slow. Twelve months, a vitrectomy, cataract surgery, and numerous visits to Mass Eye and Ear Infirmary later, I can finally see well out of my right eye.

Don’t ignore the little voice. If it is whispering or is in a full state of bellowing, it knows something is wrong. Get a second or even a third opinion if necessary.
In the next few weeks, I will be seeing many of you at upcoming club events! I’ll be presenting at the Carolinas’ Nature Photographers Association and the Florida Camera Club Council later this month, and then at the Camera Naturalist Camera Club in New Jersey. Closer to home, I will be teaching a two-part Astrophotography workshop at Stony Brook Camera Club.

If you have camera gear you would like to sell, the next newsletter marketplace is in the works. Send along the description of your goods, your contact information and selling price and I will include it.

Clear skies!
