I'm back from the Southern Cross Astronomical Society's 42nd annual Winter Star Party. It was a week of clear skies, great company, and a sea of telescopes of every variety. Refractors, reflectors, Dobsonians, Schmidt-Cassegrains, smart telescopes, solarscopes, and more. Pure heaven! I returned from balmy Florida in time for the blizzard in New England. We got 24" in my town. I guess I missed the memo to bring warm weather back home...

Here's a link to a time-lapse from one of the nights at the star party. I photographed the scene facing north with a 20mm lens; you can see the stars rotating around Polaris at 24.6 degrees above the horizon. The star trail image shows how low in the sky Polaris is at this location.

For comparison, Polaris is 44.3 degrees in Acadia National Park. Even at 14mm, Polaris is out of the frame at this latitude. It's so cool to compare how the stars look from different points on the Earth.

As I always do, I go looking for lighthouses everywhere I go. This is a shot of the beautiful Hillsboro Inlet Lighthouse at blue hour. The wind was fierce and whipped the palm trees around. I got a good drenching from a wave while I shot this, too.
