The past few months have been a whirlwind. Hard to believe we are in May! May ushers in Milky Way photography with a diminished impact to sleep. The galactic core rises before midnight, so it's at a more reasonable hour to venture out and capture the stars.

The month of May also means its time to head out to Outer Cape Cod! There is one spot left on this lighthouse adventure. In June, we start the month with a hands-on time-lapse workshop at Castle Island, Boston, and then we head to Acadia National Park for rugged beauty and starlight! We finish off June with a weekend full of creative photography.

If you love shooting star trails, there is an awesome new (and free) tool that removes plane and satellite trails from frames - automatically. I've been a beta tester and data contributor for this application and I'm thrilled to share that it's ready for prime time. Learn about Star Trail CleanR and see how much work it saves! A huge thanks to fellow star chaser Bruce Herwig, who came up with this terrific tool! I am giddy over this application!

Last October, I suffered a retinal detachment and subsequent vitrectomy surgery in my right eye. The retina was successfully reattached thanks to the gifted surgeons at Mass Eye and Ear. Since then, my right eye has been impacted by a severe cataract, an aftereffect of the vitrectomy, which has messed up my vision and depth of field. Translation - I trip constantly and knock over things (including myself). Because of the struggle seeing, I suspended photo walks and Meetups for the time being, until it was safer to navigate again.

Wednesday, I had cataract surgery. As I write this, I am in awe and so very grateful my vision will be back. I feel this storm is beginning to get behind me. If you suffer with cataracts, consider addressing them sooner than later. The more severe the cataract, the longer it takes for your vision to clear due to the trauma the cornea endures during surgery. My cataract was intense, so achieving visual clarity will take a bit longer than normal.

Photo walks and local Meetups will soon begin scheduling. Thank you sincerely for all your patience!

Clear skies,
Silvana

(Awesome) Tool for Night Photographers - Star Trail CleanR

(Awesome) Tool for Night Photographers - Star Trail CleanR
Astrolandscape photography has many challenges, on the field and even in post-processing. For anyone who has photographed star trails, stacking the frames quickly reveals the multitude of plane trails and space paraphernalia that litter a sky full of stars and the subsequent tedious task of removing them. Not fun. Thanks to a fellow night photographer, Bruce Herwig, there is a …

Unforgettable Nights Under the Stars: My Winter Star Party Experience in the Florida Keys

Florida Keys winter star party
First, What is a Star Party? I get asked this a lot. All year round, amateur astronomers gather around the world under dark skies for star parties. People have been congregating beneath the stars with telescopes for centuries. There are even stories linking back to King George III in the 18th-19th centuries, using lanterns in trees as stand-ins (!) for …

AstrHori 6mm f/2.8 Fisheye Review: 220° of Creative Insanity for Under $300
I am a confessed glass hound. Lenses in my kit range from a vintage 1981 Nikkor 28mm f/2.8 AIS to funky and fantastic, off brand lenses, like the Helios 44-2 58 mm f/2 Russian lens. To wit, this new one in my bag, the AstrHori 6mm f/2.8 fisheye lens. This full-frame lens has a whopping 220 degree field of view. …
